Police shoot man dead, say he beat mother with skillet

A man beat his 54-year-old mother bloody with a 17-inch frying pan before police broke down the apartment door and shot him to death after he refused to drop the skillet, authorities said Monday.

Kaur Balbir was hospitalized in critical condition Monday with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain. She also has a severely broken leg and arm. Her son Satnam Singh was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chief New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said authorities got a call Sunday night to check on Balbir at her Bronx apartment because her other son, who calls her twice a day, did not reach her. She lived in public housing in the Bronx.

"He talks to his mother religiously," Browne said. "He called at 11, and was worried." Police and the apartment superintendent went to the apartment and heard a fight inside. The superintendent opened the door to see the mother on the couch, drenched in blood, Browne said.

"The super says, 'Oh my God! He killed his mother!' " Browne said. Singh, 27, was standing over her with the frying pan in his hand, he said.

Cops broke through the chained door and burst into the apartment. They ordered Singh to drop the frying pan, and he refused, Browne said.

Singh was hit three times in the torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they did not know what sparked the attack. - AP
