Riverhead cops: Man, woman tried to steal from Target store

A man and woman were arrested and charged Friday after police said they tried to shoplift more than $1,700 in goods from a Riverhead Target store.

Riverhead Town police said Erol Baturer, 25, and Tara Garcia, 21, entered the store on Old Country Road about 2:33 p.m. and began to place items in a shopping cart. The pair then tried to leave the store without paying for the some of the items.

Police said the unpaid merchandise was valued at $1,729.02.

Baturer and Garcia, who police said are homeless, each were arrested and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony. They were taken to Riverhead police headquarters for processing and held for Saturday arraignment.

Arraignment information was not immediately available.
