Dozens of motorcycle violations issued by Suffolk police

A crackdown on unsafe motorcycle operations led to the issuance of nearly five dozen summonses Sunday at a Long Island Expressway safety checkpoint, Suffolk County police said.

Police said the checkpoint was along the eastbound LIE, between exits 65 and 66 in Yaphank, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Police stopped 102 motorcycles and said they issued 56 summonses during those safety stops.

Fourteen of the violations were issued for uninspected motorcycles, police said.

Other violations included 12 for modified/loud exhaust systems; 10 for helmets that were not approved for use by the U.S. Department of Transportation; six for unregistered motorcycles; five each for failure to obey the move over law and for other various equipment violations; three for unlicensed operation; and one for a cell phone violation.
