Suffolk police probe UPS shipment of illegal sparklers

Suffolk County police are trying to determine who tried to ship about 10 to 15 pounds of sparklers to someone in the Farmingville area this week — via United Parcel Service.

The cache of illegal sparklers was surrendered to police at the Sixth Precinct in Selden on Friday after the shipping package they were in became damaged. The emergency services unit was then called to the precinct to retrieve the shipment, which likely will then be destroyed, police said.

Recent state legislation means sparklers are now legal in many counties throughout New York, but they remain illegal on Long Island.

Police did not release where the shipment of sparklers originated and did not release information on their intended delivery. The street value of the sparklers was not known.

Police said the case is under investigation.
