Taxi driver fights off would-be robbers in Roosevelt, cops say

Police are searching for two male suspects who tried to rob a taxi driver at gunpoint just after midnight Thursday in Roosevelt, only to be thwarted when the driver “began kicking the suspect with the gun,” Nassau County police said.

The suspects fled the scene empty-handed.

Police said the attempted robbery took place on Gombert Place at 12:01 a.m. The driver, 58, whose identity was not released because he is a victim, was not injured, police said.

No sooner had the two suspects entered the All Island Taxi — one in the rear seat, the other in front — than the front-seat passenger displayed a handgun, demanding the driver hand over cash, police said. Instead, police said, the driver began kicking the front-seat suspect, causing both suspects to flee the cab.

Police said the two would-be robbers were last seen running south on Gombert Place, then west onto Park Avenue.

Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477. All calls will remain confidential.
