A Long Beach couple was arrested early Sunday after allegedly assaulting a New York State trooper during a traffic stop, authorities said.
Michael Nelson and Alexandra Nelson were westbound on the Southern State Parkway near Exit 21 in a 2017 Mercedes-Benz when they were pulled over around 1:30 a.m., in Hempstead, troopers said.
As the driver, Michael Nelson, was being arrested under suspicion of drunk driving, his wife, Alexandra Nelson, exited the vehicle and attempted to obstruct the arrest, troopers said.
Troopers said while at the station, Michael Nelson "continued to act belligerent and refused to cooperate with the chemical tests."
He was charged with driving while intoxicated, assault and multiple other offenses.
"Also at the station, Mrs. Nelson remained combative. In addition to spitting at the troopers, she also threw her shoes and soiled underwear at them," according to the news release.
Alexandra Nelson was charged with attempted assault, along with other charges, police said.
At his arraignment Sunday, Michael Nelson was released on $1,000 cash bail, online court records show. At her arraignment Monday, Alexandra Nelson was released on $500 cash bail. They were both represented by Mineola-based attorney Marc Gann and are due back in court next month.
