Truck hit cyclist, drove away, Southampton Town cops say

Police are searching for a truck believed to have struck and injured a bicyclist Tuesday morning in Noyack.

Southampton Town police said the cyclist, a woman whose identity was not released, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital after the incident, which occurred just after 8:30 a.m. on Noyac Road at Ruggs Path. The hit-and-run scene is near Trout Pond Park.

The condition of the woman was not immediately known. Police said she fell from her bicycle after being struck and hit her head, losing consciousness.

Her injuries are considered non-life-threatening, police said.

Police said it is possible the driver of the vehicle, described as a black truck carrying sod, may not even know the vehicle hit the cyclist.

The victim, police said, was in a line of about 10 bicyclists riding on the narrow two-lane road and the incident occurred on a bend in the road where sight lines are limited.

Police from Sag Harbor and East Hampton Town located trucks of similar description, but Southampton Town police said, none of those proved to be the vehicle involved.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call detectives at 631-728-3454 or at 631-728-5000.

All calls will be kept confidential.
