Uber driver beaten, called racial slurs in Bethpage, police say

Nassau detectives said a 40-year-old Uber driver was punched in the head several times by his passengers because he declined to stop at a store during an early morning ride from Melville to Bethpage last month.

The driver had picked up two men in their 20s and a woman, whose age was unavailable, in Melville on Nov. 26 at about 3 a.m. when, while near Old Country Road on the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway, the passengers asked the driver to stop at the store.

When the driver declined, police said, the passengers began punching him in the head. The passengers ordered him off the Plainview Road exit in Bethpage and punched him again near Prospect Street, police said. The driver let the passengers out and they ran away, police said, adding that the driver then called police and Second Precinct officers arrived.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of swelling and bruises, police said, adding that the victim contacted police again on Monday to say his attackers also used racial slurs while assaulting him.

Detectives ask anyone with information about the incident to contact the Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
