West Hempstead man charged in assault on woman, police say

A West Hempstead man was charged after, police said, he punched a woman who refused his advances and then barricading himself in his bedroom, police said Sunday.

Ednilson David Cruz Alvarado, 24, of Cedar Street, was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree assault, first-degree attempted sexual abuse and second-degree bail jumping. He has two outstanding warrants, police said. An attorney for Alvarado could not be reached for comment.

The alleged assault occurred Friday morning when Alvarado, tried to “inappropriately” touch a 34-year-old woman who was in his home, police said. The woman pushed him away and Alvarado “punched the victim in the mouth, causing a tooth to fall out,” police said. “He then continued to punch and kick the victim in the stomach, legs and right arm.”

The woman fled and called 911, telling cops that he had barricaded himself in his bedroom, police said.

A throng of cops responded, including officers from Elmont’s Fifth Precinct, the Emergency Services Unit and Bureau of Special Operations. Police were able to get in the home and arrested Alvarado, police said.

The woman was treated at the hospital for “contusions to her right arm,” police said. Alvarado was later taken to the hospital to be treated for chest pains, police said.

Alvarado is set to be arraigned Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
