A Westhampton Beach man was charged with driving while intoxicated and other motor vehicle offenses after he left the scene of a crash in Southampton Town early Sunday, State Police said.

Peter Ethier, 26, was driving a 2001 BMW at “a high rate of speed” east on Sunrise Highway in Remsenburg when he struck a 2002 Ford from behind, causing the Ford to roll over about 4:30 a.m., just east of Speonk-Riverhead Road, authorities said.

The Ford’s driver and rear passenger suffered leg injuries and were taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue. The front seat passenger suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is in critical condition.

Ethier left his vehicle and fled the crash scene on foot, police said. Troopers found him a short while later at his residence.

He also was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and operating a vehicle without an interlock device, both misdemeanors, along with traffic violations, police said. Other charges are pending.

Ethier was being held for arraignment in Suffolk County First District Court.
