WOODBURY - Gov. Andrew Cuomo made a point of calling out the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) in his State of the State remarks today.

"When it comes to the Long Island Power Authority, it's never worked, it never will, and the time has come to abolish LIPA," the governor said.

Cuomo says after the utility's abysmal Sandy response, it should be privatized and overseen by a newly empowered Public Service Commission.

Opponents say a privatized utility on Long Island could mean higher rates, because public utilities can borrow more cheaply than private ones.
