May job levels on Long Island

Long Island gained 3,400 jobs in May 2019 compared with May 2018, a 0.2 percent increase, according to new data from the state Labor Department. Education and health services had the biggest increase, up 4.2 percent with 11,400 new positions, while the construction sector was up 5.1 percent with 4,300 new jobs. The professional and business services sector lost 9,400 jobs over the year for a 5.4 percent drop. The first chart animates job levels for the 10 sectors on Long Island from 1990 to 2019.
