Pretax profits for New York Stock Exchange member firms rose to $17.3 billion last year, the highest in four years and an increase of 21 percent following three years of declining profits. Di Napoli's office attributed the rise to "cost-cutting and lower noncompensation expenses, which include the cost of legal settlements."

The bonus pool estimates are for securities industry employees who work in New York City. The estimates are subject to revision. According to the comptroller's office, "Historical bonuses are OSC estimates utilizing data from the state Department of Labor's Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages series. The 2016 estimate was derived by the Office of the State Comptroller from personal income tax withholding collections and reflects cash payments and deferred compensation for which taxes have been withheld. The estimate does not include stock options or other forms of deferred compensation from which taxes have not yet been withheld."

Profit information prepared by the comptroller's office comes from NYSE/Intercontinental Exchange and the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

The figures are not adjusted for inflation.
