State Police arrested a Bronx man after a pursuit down the Southern State Parkway and onto the Sagtikos Parkway, before troopers used their vehicles to block the fleeing suspect.
Giergi Dedaj, 49, was arrested on Saturday night on charges of driving while ability impaired by drugs, unlawful fleeing a police officer, criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal mischief, said Trooper Mike Mawn of the Brentwood barracks.
He had 42 grams of the "date rape" drug GHB, which police also believe he had taken before getting behind the wheel, Mawn said.
About 10:45 p.m. Saturday, motorists reported Dedaj's Honda Accord weaving in and out of traffic without his lights on near Straight Path on the Southern State Parkway. When two troopers attempted to pull him over at the eastbound Exit 41, Dedaj kept driving, Mawn said.
Dedaj was driving on the shoulder and got close behind other cars, but because of traffic volume, Mawn said, the pursuit did not reach high speeds.
Mawn passed him in his car and gradually slowed down, while another trooper came up behind him to box him in. "We call it a moving roadblock," he said. "He was sandwiched between two cars.
"The front was in the rear of the trooper car ahead of him," Mawn said. "At the same time, the car behind him intentionally pushed into the rear of him, thereby preventing him from escaping."
Dedaj was arrested without incident once the cars were stopped. "He was a complete gentleman," Mawn noted.
Dedaj was arraigned Sunday in Suffolk County First District Court.
