Amityville school district

VOTING

7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Northeast Elementary School and Amityville Memorial High School.

THE BUDGET

The district proposes an $86,520,543 budget for 2016-17, a 0.33 percent increase from the current $86,233,101. The tax levy would decrease by 0.21 percent, from $55,689,487 to $55,572,109.

This decrease is equal to the district’s tax-cap limit of -0.21 percent, so a simple majority vote will be required to approve the budget.

The district did not provide an estimate of how school taxes would change for the owner of an average single-family home. Under the current tax levy, school taxes on a single-family home are $6,858 in Nassau and $6,503 in Suffolk. The district is split across county lines.

The proposed budget funds a 1 percent contractual salary increase and an average step increase of 2.16 percent for teachers. It would add an Advanced Placement geography class and an AP Capstone program.
