Franklin Square school district

VOTING

8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at John Street School, Polk Street School and Washington Street School.

THE BUDGET

The district proposes a $37,249,994 budget for 2016-17, a 1.4 percent increase from the current $36,728,580. The tax levy would remain the same as the current year, at $26,744,257.

This levy is less than what is allowed under the district’s tax-cap limit of 0.13 percent, so a simple majority vote will be required to approve the budget. School taxes on the average single-family home would be $3,160.15, the same as the current year.

The proposed budget includes addition of one teaching position. Teachers accepted a salary freeze for 2016-17, the district said.

A proposition asks for authorization to establish a $10 million capital reserve fund for infrastructure needs and repairs, such as electrical upgrades, roof replacement and bathroom renovations. Money for the fund would come from current and future fund balances. Passage of the proposition would have no effect on taxes, the district said.
