Middle Country school district

6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Centereach High School and Newfield High School.

The district proposes a $240,677,522 budget for 2016-17, a 2.06 percent increase from the current $235,809,197. The tax levy would decrease by 0.247 percent, from $133,599,992 to $133,269,910.

This decrease is equal to the district’s tax-cap limit, so a simple majority vote will be required to approve the budget. School taxes on the average single-family home would decrease by 0.3 percent, from $5,604.47 to $5,590.90.

The proposed budget funds a contractual increase for teachers of 1 percent and an average step increase of 2.5 percent to 3 percent, and does not include any cuts in programs or services. Staffing levels would remain the same.
