National Poetry Month

In honor of National Poetry Month each April, Elmont’s Dutch Broadway School held its first Poetry Corner.
Assembled in a circle in the school’s gymnasium, second-graders recited their favorite poems, while parents and classmates listened attentively.
“Cherish poems, write poems, memorize them and share them, because reading poetry helps develop memory as well as develop brain cells,” said Dutch Broadway’s Assistant Principal Eileen Lambert, who planned the event.
Youngsters read the poetry nervously at first, but they enjoyed sharing silly poems, funny poems, rhyming poems and even more serious poems. Lambert was so pleased with the turnout that she hopes to have students compose their own poetry next year.
The mission of the Elmont Union Free School District is to “reach and teach for excellence,” which means continually improving instruction and increasing student achievement. Dedication to this goal is what has earned Elmont New York State
recognition for its “High Performing/Gap Closing Schools,” and as a state “model for
school success.” In partnership with the community, the district holds its students to the highest standards while maintaining one of the lowest per-pupil expenditures in Nassau County.
