A Merrick student has made his mark by balancing a wide array of activities from the classroom to the athletic fields.
David Bekore, a senior at Sanford H. Calhoun High School, has leadership positions that include serving as president of his school’s National Honor Society and the co-president of the National Council of Synagogue Youth’s Merrick Chapter.
He also is involved in several sports and clubs and has earned numerous awards and accolades for his achievements.
“It’s challenging sometimes, but they’re all things I’m passionate about,” said Bekore, 17. “I just take one thing at a time.”
Bekore’s other interests include being a writer for the school’s newspaper and a member of the math team and English, Italian, Math and Science honor societies. He was also among 35 students statewide to win a 2016 Achievement Award in Writing from the National Council of Teachers of English.
Athletically, he is an offensive linebacker on the varsity football team, a shot-put thrower on the varsity track team and a member of Athletes Helping Athletes, in which teens visit younger pupils to talk about good character.
In addition, Bekore is a three-time winner of his school’s Scholar Athlete Award and an AP Scholar with Honors, a designation for students with an average score of 3.25 on all AP Exams and scores of 3 or higher on four or more exams.
