A Greenlawn student with an eye for design has landed a wild opportunity.
Katelyn Maher, a senior at Harborfields High School, recently created a children’s T-shirt now being sold at both the Bronx and Central Park zoos featuring a fennec fox.
The opportunity unfolded when the artistic teen created a geometric animal-themed T-shirt as a final project for her computer art class during her sophomore year. Her teacher, Elizabeth DeVaney, was so impressed by the original design that she told Maher the shirt could probably be sold in zoos.
Following her teacher’s suggestion, Maher reached out a few weeks later to Bronx Zoo representatives, who invited her for a meeting. After learning that zoo officials were seeking a fennec fox concept, a motivated Maher made it happen.
“It was cool walking in and seeing someone buy my shirt,” Maher said of the Bronx Zoo. “It was a very surreal feeling.”
Maher has since founded a limited liability company titled K Maher Designs and also connected with a T-shirt distributor and a printing warehouse. The T-shirts were made available for purchase starting in June and were even showcased in a window display at the Bronx Zoo.
In addition, Maher is credited with creating her school’s sophomore and senior class T-shirts for this year’s Homecoming Day. She also plans to major in graphic design in college.
