Faces of Sandy: Dawne Alvarado

advertisement | advertise on newsday

Dawne Alvarado, 41, is still learning to adjust to the "new normal" after Sandy sent waves crashing through her Island Park home. The house has been restored, but still needs to be raised, some neighbors are not back in their homes and she lost most of her possessions. She was able to save some Christmas ornaments that had belonged to her grandmother. As the mother of two young kids, Alvarado said her children have motivated her to "get through each day for them."
