Fire forces evacuation of Huntington store

A food refrigeration unit fire at a Huntington Village supermarket forced the evacuation of the one-story building last night, officials said.

The fire, in a 6-foot-by-12-foot unit in the Waldbaum's store at 60 Wall St., was called in to the Huntington Fire Department by a store manager about 8:40 p.m., officials said. First Assistant Chief Ken Cochrane said the store was already evacuated by the time the first units arrived.

About 65 firefighters with equipment responded from the Huntington, Huntington Manor, and Halesite fire departments, Cochrane said. The blaze was confined to the refrigeration unit and extinguished within about 15 minutes, he said.

The fire was not suspicious and there were no injuries, Cochrane said.
