A Medford man was released on bail Sunday after a 9-mm Glock handgun was found in his car after Riverhead Town police pursued him in a shoplifting incident, authorities said.

Gage T. Johnson, 22, of 39 Shirley Lane, was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a handgun, misdemeanor petty larceny and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was arraigned before a town justice Sunday morning, who released Johnson on $2,500 cash bail.

He is scheduled to appear in court again Monday, police said.

Police said the incident occurred about 4:35 p.m. Saturday as officers were responding to a report that Johnson was a suspect in the theft of a Duracell AC adapter valued at $62.99 from the Kmart at 605 Old Country Rd.

Johnson, who was driving a 2015 Nissan Altima registered in Pennsylvania, fled westbound on Old Country Road, and pulled into a Target parking lot at 1150 Old Country Rd., when he saw that officers were trying to stop him, police said. A security guard was then brought to the Target lot to identify Johnson and he was taken into custody.

No further details were available.
