An 11-year-old girl was struck and killed Tuesday night by a hit-and-run driver in Smithtown, police said.

The girl, identified by Suffolk police as Courtney Sipes, was crossing East Main Street at Lawrence Avenue in Smithtown at 7:02 p.m. when she was struck by a vehicle that may have been a white, 4-door pickup truck or SUV, police said.

The truck failed to stop after the accident, police said.

Sipes was taken in an ambulance to St. Catherine of Siena Hospital in Smithtown, where she died of her injuries.

News12 reported the girl was leaving a music store with her mother, when she was struck, thrown into the air and landed under a parked red car. The girl's mother may have witnessed the accident.

Detectives said they are looking for the vehicle that struck the girl, which may have sustained front end damage.
