Protests across Long Island and the nation over the past year triggered by the deaths of George Floyd and others at the hands of police have forced the nation to examine its past and unequal treatment of Black people.

As part of that social and racial reckoning, advocates and activists are demanding recognition of Black people’s contributions to U.S. history--and the fact that some revered Founding Fathers and figures such as Declaration of Independence signer and Long Island plantation owner William Floyd owned slaves while espousing freedom for all men.
