MORICHES/Councilman calls on Cuomo to close duck farm

Brookhaven Councilman Dan Panico yesterday called on Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to close the Jurgielewicz Duck Farm in Moriches. Panico said the duck farm is guilty of polluting the Forge River with duck waste and discharging excessive nitrogen into it.

Jonathan Sinnreich, a lawyer for the duck farm, said there is "absolutely no reason from an environmental standpoint to close the duck farm."

A spokesman for Cuomo said the attorney general would consider the request.

NASSAU/County awarded $300G to help immunize children

Nassau County has received a new state grant of $300,000 toward immunization of children under age 2.

The grant will not fund a direct immunization but will let county nurses audit records of patients to see if the necessary vaccinations were given and to recommend them if they were not.
