Iwao Ojima of Port Jefferson has been selected to receive the 2013 Award for Creative Work in Fluorine Chemistry by the American Chemical Society based on his "outstanding contributions to fluorine chemistry through his pioneering and creative research" in synthetic methodology and biomedical applications. Ojima is a distinguished professor and director of Stony Brook University's Institute of Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery and has researched transition metal catalysis and medicinal chemistry. His invention of a highly efficient process for the synthesis of 5-trifluoromethyluracil was commercialized for the production of the anti-viral drug trifluridine, the university said.
