North Valley Stream: Cops name victim fatal collision
An Oceanside man killed when he was struck by a car while crossing a North Valley Stream street Saturday night was identified Sunday by police.
Michael Levine, 74, was walking east across Franklin Avenue at Linden Street at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Nassau police said, when he was hit by a northbound 2004 Chevrolet Impala. Levine was pronounced dead at the scene 10 minutes later.
The driver, a 66-year-old woman whom police declined to identify, was not charged in the crash. Her vehicle was impounded and taken for a brake and safety inspection, police said.
Farmingdale: 2 men, female driver charged in stabbing
Two men are under arrest for attempted murder following a stabbing in Farmingdale early Saturday, authorities said. Matthew K. Rumpf, 25, of 8 Madison Lane in Carle Place, and David Rosas, 25, of 7 Oakwood Ave. in South Farmingdale, became involved in an argument with a 22-year-old victim in the vicinity of 545 Fulton St. around 1:30 a.m.
The argument turned violent, authorities said, and Rosas held the victim on the ground while Rumpf stabbed him numerous times in the head and stomach. The men fled and entered a 2008 Hyundai driven by Jeanine Rodenas, 24, of Lynbrook. Police stopped the vehicle and arrested the occupants. The victim was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in stable condition. Rumpf is charged with attempted murder, assault and possession of a weapon. Rosas is charged with attempted murder and assault. Jeanine Rodenas is charged with obstructing governmental administration.
Plainview: 2 arrested after cops find marijuana, pills
Two men were arrested late Saturday in Plainview on drug charges, authorities said.
Officers in plainclothes observed Otto Giovanniello, 29, of 4 Irving Place in Greenlawn, involved in what they said was a suspicious transaction at a Mobil Gas Station at 1610 Round Swamp Rd. Giovanniello then went to his vehicle, a 2000 Audi, and police asked him and a passenger, Winston Hill, 26, of 55 Pulaski Rd. in Huntington, to get out of the car.
Giovanniello, police said, was found in possession of marijuana and 13 pills, thought to be Xanax and OxyContin. The car was searched and a backpack containing what authorities believe is marijuana was found. Hill claimed ownership and was arrested. Giovanniello is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana. Hill is charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.
About 1,400 current, former and prospective students at Columbia University have been told that their personal information, including Social Security numbers, is vulnerable following a security breach.
The university said information about the students, as well as some current and past employees, was on three password-protected notebook computers that were stolen from a Columbia College office on Jan. 18.
Columbia said in a statement that all the affected students have been notified and been offered identity theft protection services.
A criminal investigation is under way.
