SMITHTOWN / Cops: Woman killed while driving across Route 347

A Hauppauge woman was killed Friday morning as her car pulled in front of a pickup truck on Route 347 in Smithtown, Suffolk police said.

Marlene Strober, 64, was driving a 2002 Saab north on Plaisted Avenue just after 9 a.m. when she "pulled out in front of the pickup" that was traveling east on Route 347, police said in a news release.

Strober, of Hoffman Lane, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the pickup, Rafael Robles, 50, of East Lakeland Street in Bay Shore, was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center with chest injuries, police said.

Fourth Squad detectives are investigating the crash.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety inspections, police said.


EAST SETAUKET / No one hurt in blaze at garage, officials say

Firefighters from four departments battled an early-morning blaze in an attached garage at a home in East Setauket on Friday, police and fire officials said.

No one was injured.

Suffolk police said the fire on Old Field Road was reported in a 911 call at 5:51 a.m. Fire officials said the call was dispatched at 5:52 a.m.

Volunteers from the Setauket, Stony Brook, St. James and Centereach fire departments fought the fire.

Officials said Port Jefferson Ambulance and Stony Brook University Ambulance also were on the scene as a precautionary measure.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, officials said.
