LIRR adds trains, restores services cut in 2010

The Long Island Rail Road Monday added nearly two dozen trains across several of its lines.

In addition to restoring some trains eliminated during the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's 2010 service cuts, the LIRR doubled the number of westbound trains it runs out of Farmingdale during midday. The added service comes in response to years of customer calls for half-hourly, westbound off-peak service on the Ronkonkoma line -- the LIRR's busiest.

"We're always pleased when we're able to enhance service. That's why we're here," LIRR customer service vice president Joe Calderone said.

Monday also marked the return of late-night service on the LIRR's Brooklyn line. Trains will run as late as 2 a.m. to and from Atlantic Terminal, seven days a week.

The LIRR restored two peak trains each on the Far Rockaway and Long Beach lines, one evening peak train to Port Jefferson from Hunterspoint Avenue, and one evening peak train to Montauk, also from Hunterspoint.

The LIRR also is reverting to its 2010 morning rush schedule on the West Hempstead line, such as the popular 7:23 a.m. westbound train.

Malverne residents overwhelmingly supported the change in a village survey taken last fall.

"We were very pleased to be able to work with the railroad and get this train back," Malverne Mayor Patricia Norris McDonald said.

Monday marked the first workday since all of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's latest fare increase took effect.

A city subway or bus ride now costs $2.50 -- up from $2.25, and a 30-day unlimited MetroCard costs $112, up from $104. LIRR fare increases started taking effect Friday and Sunday.
