Switch trouble east of the East River tunnels delayed 40 trains and canceled four more during Friday's morning rush hour, the Long Island Rail Road said.
Spokesman Salvatore Arena said the rail service experienced delays systemwide from about 8 to 10 a.m. because of the switch issues.
The LIRR notified customers they should expect delays and diversions because of the switch issue in an email slightly after 8 a.m.; repairs were made about 45 minutes later, and the remaining delays and diversions were residual.
Two trains in Long Beach were canceled, one in Babylon and another in Far Rockaway.
Trains were running on or near schedule before noon, according to the LIRR website, mta.info/lirr.
