HEMPSTEAD: Town, law officials to hold forum on violence, drugs


Hempstead Village and Nassau County law enforcement officials are due to attend a forum tonight to field questions from village residents about violent crime and drug offenses in the community.

The community forum, set from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Kennedy Park auditorium, is being hosted by the Hempstead Coordinating Council of Civic Associations. According to the village police department, last year seven homicides, eight rapes, 276 robberies and 182 assaults were reported in the village.




GREAT NECK: Tilles re-elected to 2nd term on state Board of Regents


Roger Tilles of Great Neck, Long Island's representative to the state Board of Regents, was re-elected yesterday to a second five-year term, along with five other members of the state's education policy-making panel.

Election was by concurrent resolution of the State Legislature. Tilles, 63, was a key figure during his first term in the state's efforts to stabilize administration and finances in Hempstead, Roosevelt and Wyandanch, all school districts with long histories of political infighting and low test scores.- JOHN HILDEBRAND
