LONG ISLAND CRIME BRIEFS

CORAM

Middle Island man injured

after SUV hits trees, fence

A Middle Island man was critically injured in a single-vehicle crash early Wednesday on County Road 83 in Coram, police said.

George Roche, 67, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital after the crash south of Mooney Pond Road at 3:53 a.m., Suffolk County police said.

Police said icy road conditions may have contributed to the crash, but the investigation is ongoing.

Roche was driving his 2012 Chevrolet Suburban south on County Road 83 when police said he apparently lost control of the vehicle, struck a curb, then hit "several trees and a fence" on the west side of the road before the vehicle overturned onto an embankment.

Police said Roche remained in critical but stable condition at Stony Brook on Wednesday.

The crash forced the closure of southbound County Road 83 for several hours from Mooney Pond Road to Granny Road, police said.

NASSAU COUNTY

Police: Man spent $1,800

using missing debit card

Nassau County police and Crime Stoppers said Wednesday they are looking for a man who used another person's debit card to buy more than $1,800 worth of merchandise from two CVS stores.

Police released photographs of the suspect taken from video surveillance cameras at the stores.

Police said the card was reported missing in Oceanside, and on Feb. 16 the suspect went to two CVS stores -- one in Bellmore and the other in Wantagh -- using the card to purchase items "in excess of $1,800."

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477. All calls will be kept confidential.

FRANKLIN SQUARE

Suspect sought in assault

on NICE N6 line bus driver

Crime Stoppers and Nassau County police on Wednesday released a sketch of a suspect wanted for a March assault of a NICE bus driver in Franklin Square.

On Sunday, March 23, the N6 Nassau Inter-County Express bus was eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike when one of the passengers became irate and struck the driver about his face, police said in a news release.

The passenger started a "disturbance" because the driver missed his stop, Nassau police said in reporting the assault in March.

After the missed stop, the driver had pulled over at the Franklin Street corner, but the passenger sat back down, police said.

Three blocks later, when the rider made another commotion, the driver stopped, but was punched in the face by the rider, who ran off, police said.

The driver, 50, suffered a cut lip, police said.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477.SOUTHAMPTON TOWNTheft defendant charged

A West Babylon man in court Tuesday to plead on a misdemeanor petty larceny charge was in possession of anti-anxiety medicine without a prescription, Southampton Town Police said.

While being processed, Noble was found by a court officer "to be in possession of a quantity of Xanax pills without a prescription," according to a news release.

Noble is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance.

His arraignment information on the new charge was not immediately available.
