Joseph Jordan recalls how he first met his wife, Jennifer, a former Melville resident, and the happy coincidence that brought them together again after losing contact for several years.

We first met while working together as faculty at Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, in 2006. I had been teaching history at the school for a couple of years and Jen was just starting her job as guidance counselor. She caught my eye on the very first day of the school year when new faculty were being introduced.

We would talk here and there during the week but it was a big school and we both had very hectic schedules. Jen was living in Melville at the time and I lived in Bay Ridge. She was 27 and I was 26.

The following year I left the school to teach at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn. In 2009, Jen went to work at another school in Manhattan. We had no contact with each other until our paths intersected again in 2010.

I was interested in developing outreach programs for young adults in my parish. While researching other programs I came across Jen's name associated with a volunteer program at a church in Manhattan. Not immediately realizing who she was, I reached out with an email to learn more about the program. A series of conversations ultimately led to our first date at Casaville restaurant in Manhattan. We talked for hours. It felt very comfortable to be with each other. We continued dating, going to museums and concerts in the city, or to the beach during the summer on Long Island.

On Christmas Eve 2011, Jen and I were exchanging gifts. We were in Bay Ridge and while opening the presents we looked out the window and saw a carriage drawn by white horses taking the neighborhood children for rides. I then handed Jen one more gift, an engagement ring, and asked her to marry me.

We were married on Oct. 21, 2012, at the Church of St. Patrick in Huntington followed by a reception at the Mansion at the Woodlands in Woodbury. We spent our honeymoon in Italy.

Jen works in institutional advancement and continuing education at the SUNY College of Optometry in Manhattan.

I am deputy director at the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services and an adjunct lecturer of political science at Kingsborough Community College. We live in Bay Ridge. It was serendipity our paths would cross again. Very rarely in life do you get second chances.
