Lynn and Larry Rosenthal of Oceanside started out as two strangers on a train. Lynn recalls how their courtship began.
My husband, Larry, and I met on a Long Island Rail Road train in 1987, while commuting to our jobs in Manhattan. I was 31 and living in an apartment in East Rockaway, when one day in September I noticed Larry get on the train at the next stop, Centre Avenue station in Lynbrook.
Daily commuters usually sit in the same seats day after day, and that is what happened with us. He sat diagonally across the aisle facing me. Commuters also have daily routines. Mine was to put my mascara on during the ride into Penn Station. Larry and I would occasionally make eye contact and, eventually, I caught Larry's eyes gleaming at me as I applied my makeup.
In December, I took a week off during the holidays. On my first day back on the train, I said hello to Larry as we got up to leave. It was a few days before New Year's Eve, and I added that I wasn't looking forward to going back to work. He asked if I had been on vacation and I said, "Yes." This broke the ice and we introduced ourselves. Larry was 27 and had recently moved to Lynbrook from Lindenhurst.
I had been telling my mom about Larry and how he seemed interested in me. She recommended that I invite him over to my apartment for a glass of Champagne, to toast the holidays. I did and we exchanged telephone numbers to confirm a day.
Larry called me on New Year's Eve as I was getting ready to go out. Thinking he was calling about coming over, I panicked and responded by saying, "NOW! you want to come over NOW? I'm getting ready to go out!" He quickly explained he was also on his way to a party and only wanted to wish me a happy New Year. I told my mom what happened and that I thought I blew it. Not so — the next time we saw each other on the train Larry asked me out.
A week later, we had our first date. We went to dinner at the East Point Inn in East Rockaway. The restaurant was in a charming historic building and we became regulars. In fact, that's where Larry proposed to me in January 1989 and, not long after, we introduced our parents to each other there.
On Sept. 17, 1989, we were married at Chateau Briand in Carle Place and spent our honeymoon in Hawaii. Larry, a Giants fan, has tutored me well in the mechanics of the game and we enjoy watching games together on television. In February, we checked off one of our bucket list goals and went to the Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Last month marked our 25th wedding anniversary. We plan to return to Hawaii for a second honeymoon.
