Motorcyclist seriously hurt in LIE crash

A motorcyclist was seriously injured early Monday when her bike was rear-ended by a drug-impaired driver on the eastbound Long Island Expressway in Commack, Suffolk County police said.

The accident forced the closure of the road between exits 53 and 55 until 6:22 a.m., when the lanes were reopened, the state Department of Transportation reported.

The crash occurred at 12:10 a.m. and resulted in the arrest of D.A. Magalhaes-Lemos, 22, of Farmingville, who was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, police said.

Police said Magalhaes-Lemos was headed eastbound in his 2002 Mitsubishi sport utility vehicle when he rear-ended the motorcycle, being operated by Jinah Kim, 37, of Blue Point. She was ejected from the motorcycle and suffered what police called "serious rib and back injuries."

She was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where police said she was in serious condition.
