Nassau officials probe fire at boarded Hempstead house

Nassau County police and the fire marshal's office are investigating a suspicious fire at an abandoned Hempstead house.

The police department's arson and bomb squad responded to a call early Monday morning at 71 Evans Ave., a boarded up residence. Hempstead and West Hempstead fire departments also were at the scene with about eight trucks and 45 fire fighters.

The fire, which was reported at 2:27 a.m., was extinguished, and one fire fighter was treated for a minor hand injury at the scene.

The fire apparently was caused by an accelerant iginited inside the house, police said.
