A man died and his passenger was hurt after their motor home crashed in Old Bethpage Monday morning, Nassau County police said.

The driver, 71, was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said.

His wife suffered bruises and broken bones but was stabilized at the scene before being taken to the hospital, said Second Deputy Chief Al Bassetta of the Plainview fire department.

The crash was reported at 11:55 a.m. at Old Bethpage Road and Round Swamp Road, police said.

The 40-foot motor home, with the couple's personal vehicle in tow, was going east when the driver lost control, careening up onto an embankment next to the sidewalk before hitting a tree and a utility pole with high-voltage wires, said Bassetta, who directed the rescue.

"It was teetering on that incline," he said.

A police SWAT vehicle, a heavy-duty tow truck and metal struts had to support the leaning motor home as firefighters from Plainview and Old Bethpage helped free the couple, Bassetta said.

The driver was trapped behind the wheel, while his wife had been ejected from her seat and flung to the back, where she was trapped, the fire official said.

The downed wires and a propane tank in the motor home made the rescue dangerous, Bassetta said, and it took about 20 to 30 minutes to free the victims.

He believes the couple were on their way to Battle Row County Park, which is at the intersection and where motor homes can be parked.

No other details were available Monday night, including the cause of the accident, a police spokeswoman said.
