An explosion and boat fire in Merrick on Sunday injured a man trying to fix his motor, authorities said.

Nassau police said the victim, a 43-year-old man, was in Sea Dog Creek off Freeport when engine problems developed. The man piloted the boat to the rear dock of a home on Hewlett Avenue in Merrick. There, the man worked on the engine problem.

But soon after, the engine exploded, burning the man's face, arms and legs.

The man was taken to a hospital. His condition was unclear Sunday night.
