Glen Cove police are searching for the gunman who they said approached two men standing on Glen Cove Avenue, near Craft Avenue, at about 2:10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, 2015, and fired one shot, hitting one in the leg and one in the ankle. Credit: Glen Cove Police Department

Two Glen Cove men apparently were hit by the same gunshot -- one in the leg and one in the ankle -- as they talked outside a local apartment building early Friday, city police said.

The men were on Glen Cove Avenue near Craft Avenue when a man walking on the sidewalk fired a single shot at them about 2:10 a.m., said Glen Cove Det. Lt. John Nagle.

The bullet went through the leg of a 35-year-old victim who was standing, then hit the ankle of 55-year-old victim who was sitting, Nagle said. The victims were treated at a hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

One bullet was found at the scene and one spent casing on the sidewalk, Nagle said.

It's not clear if either man was targeted, but that is possible, the investigator said. Both men have criminal records, and the area is known for drug dealing, he said.

"They said they don't know who the person is," Nagle said. "They couldn't see anybody, just heard a bang."

Investigators have been reinterviewing witnesses and have obtained video surveillance from the area, police said.
