6 charged with forging checks at credit union

They forged checks on an account at the Nassau County Police Federal Credit Union, Nassau County police said.

And all told, police said, they stole $5,800.

Now a sixth person has been arrested in connection with the scheme police said involved forging 10 checks between Dec. 10 and Jan. 17 -- all deposited into personal accounts and then later drawn against the police credit union account.

Tamarr Ellerbe, 23,of 67 Terrace Ave., Hempstead, was arrested Thursday and charged with third-degree grand larceny, two counts of second-degree forgery, two counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument and a second-degree robbery charge from a previous open warrant.

He is scheduled for arraignment Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said Friday that five co-defendants in the scheme were previously arrested in February. They include four Hempstead residents: Shaniqua Reese, 21, of 50 Jackson Ave.; Shantavia Land, 21, of 60 Gladys Ave.; Gianni Henderson, 20, of 100 Terrace Ave.; and, Alexis Stevens, 18, of 129 Terrace Ave.. Also arrested was Ashley Smellie, 20, of 400 B 1st Ave., New Hyde Park.

Police said all of the co-defendants were charged with second-degree possession of a forged instrument. Smellie was additionally charged with third-degree grand larceny.

The five co-defendants were arraigned in February.

The status of their cases was not immediately available.
