A Hempstead man was charged Thursday after, Nassau police said, he yanked a gold chain off a woman's neck at an East Meadow bus stop.

Police said Adrian Crocker, 23, walked up next to the woman at the bus stop at Front Street and Berg Avenue about 1:28 p.m. and asked her the time -- then ripped the 34-year-old woman's gold chain off her neck. The woman yelled, and a man who had seen the incident grabbed the robber, causing him to drop the chain and flee.

After police were given a description of the robber, First Precinct officers saw Crocker walking on Mitchell Avenue. They tried to stop him and he fled through rear yards, police said. They chased him and eventually found him hiding in some bushes, and arrested him.

No one was hurt, police said.

Crocker, of 189 Wellesley St., is being charged with third-degree robbery and is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
