Armed robbery reported in W. Hempstead

A man and woman walking in West Hempstead early Sunday morning were robbed by a man with a gun, Nassau police said.

A 24-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were walking near Hempstead Turnpike and Broad Street at about 3 a.m. when a man came up to them displaying a handgun, police said.

The suspect demanded money from the male victim, and the victim gave the suspect his wallet, which contained an unknown amount of cash, police said. The suspect then took the woman's pocketbook, which contained an unknown amount of cash and personal papers, before fleeing south on Broad Street and jumping into a newer-model, two-door red Honda, police said.

The Honda, which was occupied by two men, then drove east on Hempstead Turnpike.

No one was injured in this incident.

The suspect was described as about 20 years old, 6 feet tall, thin, wearing blue jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt.

Police ask anyone with information about this case to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. Calls will be kept anonymous.
