Cops: Desk clerk at New Cassel community center stole cash from safe

A desk clerk at a New Cassel community center was arrested Thursday and charged with stealing cash from the safe, Nassau County police said.

Police did not say how much money was taken.

The employee, identified as Barbara Jean, 37, of 336 Rose Place, New Cassel, was charged with grand larceny.

Police said that between April 7 and May 22, Jean took three deposit envelopes containing cash from the safe at the Yes We Can Community Center on Garden Street.

Jean's bail was set at $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond at her arraignment Friday in First District Court in Hempstead, according to online court records.

It was not immediately clear what evidence led police to Jean. Police said she was arrested after an investigation.
