Bicyclist hit, killed by LIRR train in Hicksville

Service on the Port Jefferson branch of the Long Island Rail Road was briefly suspended Tuesday after an unauthorized person riding a bicycle on the tracks was struck by a train and killed, the agency said.

Full service was restored before the evening rush hour, spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said. The engineer on the train reported that the crossing gates were working and were in the down position when the train hit the unidentified man at about 1:25 p.m. at the Urban Avenue crossing just west of the Hicksville station, she said.

Police were investigating, Anders said.

The accident caused initial delays of up to 20 minutes in both directions east of Mineola on the Huntington/Port Jefferson and the Ronkonkoma branches.
