Boy, 16, stabbed to death in Hempstead

A Hempstead teen was stabbed to death near a local restaurant early Saturday, police said.

Hempstead police responded to reports of an assault about 3:30 a.m. at a Kennedy Fried Chicken restaurant on the corner of Fulton Street and Cameron Avenue, police said.

Near the restaurant on Cameron Avenue between Fulton Street and Devon Road, they found Erick Avalos, 16, had been stabbed several times, according to Det. Lt. Kevin Smith. Avalos was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow where he was pronounced dead at 4:05 a.m., police said.

Avalos had been with three other friends at the restaurant when they were approached by two men who asked who they were and who they were with, police said. The men asked Avalos and his friends to step outside, and three of the friends did go outside briefly, Smith said.

Avalos was the only one to remain outside as his two friends returned to the restaurant, police said. Within moments, a passerby outside called into the restaurant saying that the man had been stabbed.

"All we know is there could be several people involved in the assault. There could be some gang overtones," Smith said.

A makeshift memorial of candles and flowers sat in front of 22 Cameron Ave. Saturday afternoon.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. Callers will remain confidential.
