A motorist crashed into an unoccupied State Police car on the westbound Southern State Parkway early Saturday morning -- after officers had arrived on the scene hours earlier when an unauthorized tractor trailer hit an overpass in Wantagh, authorities said.

The odd sequence of events began at 9:28 p.m. when a trailer carrying food products hit the overpass bridge near Exit 28, State Police said.

The accident closed two lanes of the parkway for several hours as trucks were brought in to unload the trailer's cargo.

Shortly before 1 a.m. another vehicle, ignoring road flares set up along the parkway, rammed into the back of a patrol car, police said.

That driver, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital and treated for minor injures, police said. The motorist was not charged.

The trooper, who was out of the vehicle at the time, was not hurt, police said.
