Upstate man charged with DWI after almost hitting officer, cops say

An upstate man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated early Sunday morning in East Meadow after he drove the wrong way, and almost collided with an officer's car, Nassau County police said.

Police said an officer saw Christian Delacruz, 37, of Highland Mills, drive his 1998 BMW south on the sidewalk of the northbound lanes of Carman Avenue. Delacruz continued onto the roadway, headed in the wrong direction and across four lanes, police said.

He then headed for the car of a Third Precinct officer assigned to the department's drunken-driving unit. The officers swerved to avoid a head-on collision, police said. The officer finally got Delacruz to pull over and he was arrested.

Police have charged Delacruz with second degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving, driving while intoxicated, Driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed operation third degree, and multiple traffic infractions.

Delacruz was arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
