Clerk, customer catch robber, cops say

A Roosevelt man was arrested Saturday shortly after the theft of lottery tickets from a gas station in Uniondale, Nassau County police said.

Ralph Wilkerson, 57, went to the Shamrock gas station at 940 Nassau Rd. about 3:15 p.m. and asked for $25 worth of scratch-off lottery tickets, police said.

After the clerk gave Wilkerson the tickets, police said Wilkerson ran from the store without paying.

The clerk ran after Wilkerson, grabbing him in the parking lot, police said. Wilkerson then pushed the clerk and grabbed his neck before a customer at the station intervened. The customer took hold of Wilkerson, who released the clerk's neck, police said. The two held Wilkerson until police arrived.

The clerk was cut on his hand and wrist, but refused medical attention. Wilkerson and the customer were not injured.

Wilkerson was arrested and charged with second-degree robbery. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
