Convicted sex offender charged in child porn

A convicted sex offender living with his mother in Massapequa has been arrested and accused of using her Internet connection to access child pornography, according to court papers charging the man with possessing the illegal videos.

The sex offender, Jay Kroll, 56, told federal agents who raided the home and arrested him Thursday that he kept child pornography on a computer disk under his pillow, the court papers say. They said he told agents that he used the pornography "to keep himself from doing what he did in the past and so he doesn't hurt anyone."

Kroll is accused of possessing "numerous images and videos," according to the sworn complaint filed by a federal agent on the case.

Kroll, of Mohawk Place, is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in U.S. District Court in Central Islip, according to Robert Nardoza, spokesman for Eastern District prosecutors. Kroll faces a minimum 15-year prison sentence if convicted, Nardoza said.

According to court papers, Kroll served 6 years in prison for sodomizing an 11-year-old in the early 1990s. That case was in upstate Sullivan County, state prison records show.

The latest allegations against Kroll came to the attention of federal investigators after the Internet Protocol address registered to his mother was identified as sharing videos online of underage boys engaged in sexual activity. Kroll is listed on the New York State sex offenders registry at his mother's address.
